Forex markup fee

A forex markup fee is a charge banks add on top of the actual currency conversion rate whenever you make a purchase in a foreign currency, whether swiping abroad or shopping on an international website. It typically ranges from 0% to 3.5% of the transaction value, and is separate from the exchange rate itself, which is set by the card network (Visa, Mastercard, RuPay), not the bank. Most premium travel cards charge little or nothing; many everyday cards charge close to the maximum.
