Written-off account

An account is written off when a lender gives up trying to recover an outstanding balance after prolonged non-payment, usually well past 90-180 days overdue, and removes it from their books as a loss. Importantly, a write-off does not erase your legal obligation to repay the debt, and it is one of the most damaging entries a credit report can carry, often staying visible for years and making new credit approvals very difficult.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, a write-off is an accounting action by the lender, not a waiver of your debt. They, or a collections agency they sell the debt to, can still pursue repayment.
Only by fully repaying the outstanding amount and requesting the lender update the status, typically to "closed" or "settled." Even then, the write-off history often remains visible for a period.
