Welcome bonus / joining bonus
A welcome bonus (also called a joining bonus) is a one-time reward, bonus points, a cash voucher, or a gift, given when you're issued a new card, usually on completing a minimum spend within the first 30-90 days. These can meaningfully offset a card's joining or first-year annual fee, sometimes covering it entirely, which is worth factoring into a card's real first-year cost rather than just looking at the fee in isolation.
