EMI

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment, a fixed amount paid each month toward a loan or a large credit card purchase converted into instalments, combining a portion of principal with interest. Converting a credit card purchase to EMI usually involves a processing fee and interest charged over the chosen tenure (commonly 3, 6, 9, or 12 months), so while it spreads out a big expense, the total amount repaid is generally higher than paying the full amount upfront.

Frequently asked questions
Not always. Regular EMI conversion includes interest and a processing fee. No Cost EMI schemes offset the interest through a merchant discount, but they are not universally available and depend on the specific offer.
Converting to EMI itself does not directly hurt your score, but the EMI amount reduces your available credit limit for that period, and missing an EMI payment is reported just like any other missed payment.
